WE’RE TAKING ACTION AGAINST SOME OF THE OCEAN’S BIGGEST PROBLEMS

We contributed to science.

Partnering with organizations like REEF and CSUMB, our students and members have completed over 20 surveys to aid in the conservation of marine habitats. We use citizen science techniques to collect and report information on marine fish populations as well as selected invertebrate and algae species in the Monterey area. The data we collected is housed in a publicly-accessible database, and used by a variety of resource agencies and researchers.

We helped restore coral reefs.

For the past few years, student groups have participated in hands projects to restore the coral reef system in partnership with Coral Restoration Foundation Bonaire. Through training and certification, students have aided in growing more than 8000 corals in offshore nurseries and transplanting mature Staghorn and Elkhorn coral onto degraded reefs.

We kept plastics out of our ocean.

Throughout the past few years, we’ve facilitated beach cleanups to help reduce litter, protect our ocean, and raise awareness about litter and plastic pollution. We’ve conducted cleanup events above and below the water, exposing our students and members to the impact our behaviors can have on ocean life.

We took the classroom underwater.

Blue Endeavors began by creating custom scientific dive training and certification curriculums for high schools.  These courses take the form of lecture or lab classes and are stand-alone, or attached as a unit to existing marine biology, elective, or after school programs.

Each of our classes literally creates an underwater classroom in both a pool, and the ocean itself.  In our classrooms, students learn and experiment with physics, physiology, engineering, and marine biology and either compliments, or replaces traditional classroom delivery methods to reach students of all learning modalities.

We supported students in need.

Alameda Unified School District, our nearest local school district, has a diverse student population: about 36% Asian, 29% White, 16% Hispanic, 8% Black/African American, 9% two or more races, 1% Pacific Islander, and .25% American Indian or Alaskan Native. Approximately 18% are English language learners and approximately 27% receive free or reduced-price meals.

While the specific student body demographics vary, partnering with local public schools is a move in the right direction to increase the inclusivity of our program. We anticipate building an increasing network of public school connections in order to reach as many students in Blue Endeavors hub areas as possible.

WE WILL CONTINUE TO REACH, TRAIN, AND EXPOSE MORE PEOPLE TO THESE OPPORTUNITIES WHILE PRODUCING GREATER RESULTS AS WE GROW.

And we’re just getting started.

As we continue to grow, our Alameda presence will expand to complete our Explore Store vision. Blue Endeavors programs and Dr. Sylvia Earle’s 1000 meter submersibles will be housed in the DOER Marine wing of the planned San Francisco Bay Ecotarium — opening next to Pier 39 in 2022.

We’re creating a global network.

Centered around the Blue Endeavors headquarters in Alameda, a collection of hubs and projects will provide a place for individuals to meet, learn, explore the oceans and participate in conservation and restoration programs. Each hub location will consist of a primary advocate, a dive center, a focus project, a school or organizational partner, and hub wide events.
